Monday, January 26

Congratulations:  Three cheers for Vickie Leigh, Wiley’s 2014/15 Teaching Assistant of the Year.  Ms. Leigh was recognized by her colleagues for her loyalty and for her dedication to her students & the Wiley school community. We are so fortunate that Ms. Leigh calls Wiley home!

Opportunity to Host an International Student for a Meal:  The Office of International Services (OIS) at NC State recently welcomed over 100 new international students to the university. Apart from the immigration services that the office provides to international students and scholars, they offer several cross-cultural programs to help international students and scholars connect to campus and the community.  One of those programs is Breaking Bread, a meal hosting program in which international students, scholars, and their families are matched with American hosts to share their cultures over a meal. Over 90 students and scholars were able to participate in the program last semester; however OIS is in need of additional hosts as there are over 50 students and scholars remaining on the waiting list. By hosting for the Breaking Bread program, you are extending a hand of hospitality to NC State's students and scholars through one of the world’s common cultural denominators: food! This is a one-time commitment with a lifelong possibility of friendship! For more information or to submit an application, please visit the Breaking Bread website or email the International Programs Coordinator, Alexis McCloskey, at anmcclos@ncsu.edu

Calvin Wiley:  Ever wonder about the gentleman for whom Wiley is named?  Check out this link to enjoy a short article highlighting his contributions to the NC public school system.

Magnet Application Window:  The window for middle school magnet applications is open from January 26 – February 5.

Wiley Spotlight

This week’s spotlight shines on Carrie Hinson, Spanish Student Teacher from NC State and Zandra Henderson, Spanish Teacher.

Get to know Carrie (on right in photo) …
What do you like to do during the summer? I like to go on walks, travel, and knit.
If you could teach anywhere (other than Wiley), where would it be?  Anywhere – as long as I’m working with elementary students.
Who was your most memorable teacher? My grandfather, Frank Pavia – I didn’t have him as a teacher, but he inspired me.  He was a chemistry teacher in Detroit.
What is something that you are most proud of, that most people don't know about you? When I was 16, I went to Hungary and taught English for a month.  It was really hard because I didn’t know anything about teaching.
If you could have any teacher, who would it be?  my grandfather

Get to know Zandra (on left in photo) …
What do you like to do during the summer? I like to travel and relax at the beach.
If you could teach anywhere (other than Wiley), where would it be?   I would teach in a third world country, maybe Colombia, because there are so many students that don’t have access to quality education.
Who was your most memorable teacher? La professor Sara at Village of South in Colombia. She was my history teacher, and she was the most caring teacher I had as a student.
What is something that you are most proud of, that most people don't know about you? When I was in my 20’s, I came to the United States and didn't speak a word of English, but I survived.  Also, I represented my country (Colombia) in the ’96 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA – track.
If you could have any teacher, who would it be?  When I was in a college music class, I always wished that Beethoven was there teaching the class.

Wiley Spotlight

This week’s spotlight shines on Ms. Abel, second grade teacher.
If you could work anywhere, besides Wiley, where would it be? In a camp-setting, daycare … somewhere definitely working with kids.
Who is your most memorable teacher?   That’s an easy one!  Ms. Susan Conklin, fourth grade teacher at Gatelot Elementary School in Long Island, New York.  I used to play school all the time when I came home from her class.  She was sweet and patient.
Tell us about your favorite teaching moments.   I love those moments when students realize that I don’t actually live at school … “What?  You mean you go home after this?!”

What is your favorite thing about Wiley?  I enjoy the small community feel.  It’s nice to be able to walk in the hallways and know most of the students.  The parent involvement is incredible, and the students really look out for each other.

Calling Talented Parents (& Guardians!) of Talented Children.... The Wiley Talent Show Committee needs You!
Wiley's Talent Show is a time children share talents, skills and creativity ... or just invite others to laugh along with them. It's great fun! But it doesn't happen through magic. It happens through illusion - the illusion it was no work at all.
Parent "illusionists" are needed for the Initial Review of Acts (aka Audition Day), the Dress Rehearsal and the Talent Show itself. Stage experience is NOT required. If you are flexible and can commit to a few weeks of (managed) chaos in February and early March, if you know about sound systems, lighting, script writing, organizing details or wrangling cats, the Wiley Talent Show needs you! It is an amazing opportunity to serve our kids and encourage them to shine.
Initial organization and planning will begin later this month. Due to technology changes, even if you've volunteered before, we need to hear from you again!  Please commit to helping with this great event by emailing Scott Andrews at talent.show@wileypta.org.

Volunteers Needed for Science Night
Science Night is coming up mid-April. Our fabulous chair, Sarah Luginbuhl needs your help to make this event a success! There are volunteer opportunities for those with time available during the day or evening. Please reach out directly to the chairs at  scence.night@wileypta.org. She is planning an initial organizing meeting in the near future.

Fun Run Committee Members Needed:
Last year, Wiley had its first fun run. This year, we’re beginning the planning early to allow time to make changes to make the event a great fit for Wiley. We’re looking for committee members to help us with this event. Please email vp.waysandmeans@wileypta.org           to join the group and help define what the event will look like this year.
