Final Updates for 2012-2013

Updates 6/10/13

This has been a phenomenal year! Thank you for continuing to make Wiley the BEST school on the planet:) I hope you and your family have a wonderful summer!

Our Community Cares!
With a partnership between Reese Consulting (Wiley parent, Billy Reese's company) and the Wiley PTA, we established the annual Dianne Jones Teaching Award last week. Congratulations to Mrs. Jones, the honorary award recipient! Read more here at www.wileypta.org.

Garden Summer Help Needed
Please help water three Wiley gardens during this summer.  They are...
  • the Savannah @ Northeast Corner of School; Intersection of Calvin Rd & St. Mary's St,
  • the Natural Learning Garden @ Southeast Side of Main Building, and
  • the PTA Circle garden @ Southwest Side of Main Building
For the access to water source, please refer to the instruction below (available on June 15).
The watering schedule will start in the week of June 16-22 and end in the week of August 18-24.  A mid-week date, Wednesday is a suggested sign up date for watering, however, it can be done any sunny day of the week at your convenience.

Please send parent, Hisayo Tago, a note when watering is done and if you notice any changes in the gardens.

Thank you for helping and keeping the Wiley gardens beautiful in advance.

Moonlight Pizza, Anyone?

Parent Input for 2013-2014
Last week I began collecting parent input letters regarding placement in classes for next year. You can drop off a letter in the office or email it directly to me at kmcmahon@wcpss.net. If you choose to write a letter, please consider the following questions:

1. What went well this year and what could be even better for your child next year?
2. What kind of learner is she or he?
3. What kind of environment does she or he tend to thrive most?
4. **Because teachers primarily develop class lists for their students in the next grade (ex. current second grade teachers make classes for the students' third grade year), the answer for the following question will be shared with grade level teachers: Are there one or two other students with whom they should be placed in order to facilitate a smooth transition?

Parents of rising Kindergarteners, please feel free to also write a letter for your child! These will be considered during staggered entry.

As in the past, your letter will remain confidential (with the exception of question 4). Remember that I cannot accept letters that request specific teachers in any way.  The last day we will accept letters for rising 1st-5th graders is May 24, 2013.
Upcoming Dates:
May 20-22: EOGs for 3rd through 5th grade
May 21: Moonlight Pizza Restaurant Night
May 24: Parent Input Letters due date
May 27: Memorial Day Holiday
June 3: Field Day
June 4: Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, 9am

An Amazing Week
Last week was a great celebration! Our parents fed the staff a daily international feast for Teacher Appreciation Week. Families brought foods from all over the world to sustain us through spring fever!
We also had one more chance to honor our WCPSS Teacher of the Year finalist, Mrs. Jones. Local businesses sponsored the district banquet for hundreds of staff. This VIDEO spotlights Mrs. Jones and the other 11 finalist. Out of 9,000 teachers we are more than honored to call Mrs. Jones part of the Wiley family.
Finally, our famous International Night--Wow! My cheeks still hurt from smiling!! The student performances, student market, art galleries, and global games were more than impressive. We organized the entire night to be 100% student centered which made for a joyous event for all. Additionally, the student chosen organization Stop Hunger Now will receive $1,002 from our basket raffle! We raised these funds in just 3 hours for an organization so closely aligned to Wiley's mission of taking action in our community. This year's event could not have been possible without the collaboration of teachers and parents. Thank you for another awesome celebration of our globally focused world at Wiley!
Library Books Due Soon
All library books are due back to the media center by May 24th. If you have a lost or damaged library book, please read the following information on Ms. Molloy's website: WEBSITE. She also has some tips on the best places to look for lost library books: LOST BOOKS. Please contact her if you have any questions: jmolloy@wcpss.net.

Joyful, Grateful
This week, Mrs. Molloy sent an email to the Wiley staff that created numerous joyful responses. I cannot resist sharing it with you, too. It is true that it does take a village and there is no greater village than Wiley's. Thank you.

I wanted to share with you some acts of generosity I've seen in the library in the past few weeks.

- Three separate families -- some who live in the neighborhood and do not even have children attending Wiley -- made $100 donations to the book fairy fund this year! There have been many other contributions to book fairy, as well, and every penny helped.
- One parent bought a book off of every single teacher's wish list! He and his child spent at least an hour searching for these books and purchasing them.
- Parents and teachers have been purchasing books at the book fair for their Wiley pals and the students they tutor.
- Sixty-two Wiley students received free books from book fairy funds!

I'm so happy to be a part of the wonderful Wiley community. Thank you for all the acts of kindness and generosity you perform each day. They do make a difference :)

THIS WEEK:  Support Those Who Support our Community
Through the years the Salvation Army has helped a number of Wiley families.  Now it's our turn to give back.  The shelves of this community organization's food pantry are bare as we look ahead to the summer months- a time of particular food stress for many families.  With school out, many children are left without resources for breakfast and lunch and families often turn to the Salvation Army for assistance.

If you'd like to help, check your cupboards for any canned goods or other non-perishable food items that would help the Salvation Army re-stock their community pantry.  Items like canned fruits, vegetables, meats, peanut butter and powdered milk are needed.  So pick up some extra items at the grocery store and send them to school with your child the THIS WEEK. They will be taken at the end of the week to the Salvation Army and to the cupboards of our community
