WCPSS
Volunteers: All
continuing volunteers approved for the 2013-2014 school year MUST reactivate as a volunteer no
later than 4:00 p.m. on October 31, 2014. Volunteers may go to any WCPSS
site and register through the intranet. After
October 31, 2014, individuals previously approved may not volunteer without a
new criminal record check. To avoid
unnecessary costs to the school system, volunteers are encouraged to reactivate
before October 31, 2014.
Magnet Fair: The
Office of Magnet Programs is hosting its annual Magnet and Early College Fair
on Saturday, November 1 at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High Schools 9am - 12pm.
5th and 8th grade families are encouraged to attend to explore their magnet middle
and high school options. There will be staff and parents who can answer
questions along with school tour schedules. For more information call the
Office of Magnet Programs.
Sadie
Hoover, Wiley’s Magnet Coordinator, is seeking parent volunteers to join us at
the Fall 2014 Magnet Fair on November 1st. Please consider joining the Wiley
team to provide the parent-to-parent perspective for our prospective families.
Students are also welcome to attend and share their perspectives on being
a student at Wiley. Contact Sadie at shoover@wcpss.net if
interested.
Wiley Website: If you are experienced with Dreamweaver and have a bit of time to spare, please consider helping us update the basic
design of our website. Contact Leslie Taylor, ltaylor2@wcpss.net, if interested.
Walkers: Please have your green cards available when you
pick up your walkers in the afternoons.
To ensure the safety of our students, those that do not have a card with
them or those going home with a friend that didn't bring a note will be
asked to go to the office before the child can be released. Please make sure your
child knows if there has been a change in how they are going home.
Technology
Maintenance: Wiley currently has a need for volunteers to clean projectors, computers
and computer tables for classroom teachers. This task would require
bringing a small handheld vacuum and a step stool to reach mounted projectors.
All other necessary tools will be provided (i.e. screwdriver, cleaning
kit, wipes). The best time for this task would be during planning periods
of classroom teachers or on Wednesday’s workday, so as not to disrupt core
instruction or elective courses. This type of cleaning will help maintain
the life of our technology devices. If interested in this opportunity,
please email Sadie Hoover at shoover@wcpss.net.
Wiley's Media and Technology Advisory
Committee: This committee, led by Jill Molloy
and Sadie Hoover, is looking for three parents to join our group. We will meet
once or twice this school year to discuss the book and technology collection at
Wiley. Typically, we meet after the children have left school for the day or
before school begins in the morning. Our plan is to assess what we currently
have, decide what is needed for the future, and discuss our plans for moving
forward. If you would like to be a part of these discussions, please contact
Jill Molloy at jmolloy@wcpss.net.
Spirit Week: We’re celebrating the fun of Spirit Week -
October 27th-31st
MONDAY - At Wiley we think of
school as our home away from home: dress comfy & cozy (wear pjs or other
comfortable clothes - no slippers or stuffed animals).
TUESDAY- At Wiley we work
together as a team to learn and play: wear clothes or colors that help you
represent a sports team or any other team/club that you're involved in or that
you like.
WEDNESDAY- At Wiley we enjoy
taking a break every now and then ... it's a Teacher Workday!
THURSDAY- At Wiley we use our
brains to work with purpose and passion: decorate your brain with a hat or
crazy hair.
FRIDAY- At Wiley, we have spirit:
wear your Wiley wear (and throw in a little bit of black to
support Kindergarten's 'Color Fridays'!).
Wiley Staff Spotlight of the Week
This week's spotlight shines on Vickie Leigh. Ms. Leigh has called Wiley home for several years, and she values the community, rich history, and nurturing atmosphere of our school. Learn more about Ms. Leigh ...
What do you like to do during the summer?
I like to travel and spend time with my girls.
If you could pick anywhere to teach, where
would it be? Why? (And you can't pick your present job).
I would go teach in an elementary in Matanzas, Cuba because
that’s where my “second family” lives. I
had the opportunity to visit them this summer.
What's the funniest thing that has happened to
you while teaching?
Just this year, while on the playground, a first grader was
looking at my badge. He looked at the the badge and then looked back at me. I
said, “I look different now, don’t I?” thinking that he would comment on the
length of my hair. Instead he commented, “Yes, you were much younger there!”
Who was your favorite teacher?
My favorite teacher was Mr. Branch because he encouraged me
to think outside the box.
Tell us about your family.
I have two daughters. Jasmine, 21 attends Appalachian State
and Nora, 16 a junior at the Trilogy School. Both are Wiley graduates! I also
have a dog named Phillip.

The Gardens
and Grounds Committee will hold the next work day on Sunday November 9th from
1:30-3:30pm. We will continue the mulching work at the front of the school. We

6 EASY Ways to Raise Resources for
Wiley—NOW!
Budgets
are tight and becoming tighter and tighter--below are some very easy ways to
help our kids and raise money for Wiley programs without any extra money or
your own. Last year the combined efforts of these programs raised $4300!!.
1. Link your
Harris Teeter VIC card. Harris Teeter will give Wiley money every purchase you make
of a Harris Teeter Brand product during the school year-all you have to do is
ask them to link your card! Last year,
Wiley earned $805.89 through this program.
At checkout, simply tell the Harris Teeter cashier to link to Wiley
(#2920), or link on-line at www.harristeeter.com, or call
1-800-432-6111 and choose option #3.
However, you have to relink your VIC card every school year!
2. Use your Target
REDcardSM for purchases. If you currently have a Target debit
or credit card, you can enroll in the Take
Charge of Education program and designate Wiley (#81109) as the benefiting
school. Wiley will receive 1% of your
purchases at Target and Target.com, and ½% of purchases made elsewhere with
your Target Visa. Last year, only 52 people who simply signed up
for a Target Redcard and enrolled in Target’s Take Charge in Education
program. Imagine what we could raise if
more people enrolled! For more
information on applying for a Redcard or their education program, see www.target.com/tcoe
or call 1-800-316—6142.
3. Link your Food
Lion MVP card. When you register your MVP card for Food Lion’s Shop &
Share program and indicate Wiley as your charitable organization a portion of
total grocery purchases will be donated to Wiley. Stop by any Food Lion customer service or go
to the Food Lion website: www.foodlionmvprewards.com.
4. Cut out box
tops. Box Tops for Education 10¢ coupons are on
hundreds of General Mills® products and partnering brands, like Cheerios®,
Betty Crocker®, Hefty®, Juicy Juice®, Ziploc®, Kleenex®, Kotex® and many more.
Visit www.boxtops4education.com for a complete
listing.
5. Cut out labels
for education. Clip participating
product UPCs and Beverage caps/sauce caps from Campbell's®, BIC®, DANNON® Kids
Yogurts, Emerald® Nuts, Franco-American®, GLAD® Food Storage, Pace®, Pepperidge
Farm®, Pop Secret®, Post® Cereals,
Prego®, SpaghettiOs®, Swanson®, Time Inc.® Magazines, V8®, and Wolfgang
Puck™. See http://www.labelsforeducation.com/
for more information.
6. Shop at Office
Depot. Consider shopping at Office Depot for some of
your school supplies. Wiley’s Office
Depot number is 70062148.
Ask your friends and family to do all
these things too! It’s an easy, painless way for them to support your child’s
education!
