Single
Subject Acceleration: Single Subject Acceleration (SSA)
is the practice of assigning a student to a higher-grade level than is typical,
given the student's age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately
challenging learning opportunities. SSA is an accelerative practice that allows
students to show mastery of the content of a course without having taken the
course.
What is the process for Single
Subject Acceleration?
Parents
can nominate his/her child to skip a grade level of content in either
Language Arts OR Mathematics.
Only
students who are enrolled and attending WCPSS schools during the Nomination and
Testing Windows will be eligible to participate in the in SSA during the
2015-2016 school year. Schools will offer differentiation as needed for
students entering WCPSS after the SSA deadlines.
Parents
may nominate students for this accelerative practice ONLY within our school’s
specified nomination window. Wiley’s
nomination window is April 13-24, 2015.
Testing
will ONLY occur during our specified testing window during Spring of 2015. Wiley’s testing window is May 4-8, 2015. Accelerative services will commence at the
start of the 2015-2016 school year.
For more
information, including dates and locations of regional Parent Informational
Sessions, please refer to www.wakeacceleration.weebly.com
or contact Wiley’s SSA contact, Lecia
Cecconi-Roberts at lcecconi-roberts@wcpss.net. Parents are encouraged to
attend one of these regional meetings. Understanding that not all parents will
be able to attend one of the evening meetings, the information will also be
posted on the internet site above.
Wiley Spotlight
This week’s spotlight shines on our principal, Leslie
Taylor.
What do you like to do during the summer? I love to
go to the beach where I spend time with family & friends and catch up on my
leisure reading. I also spend a lot of
time at the pool with my son, and if I’m lucky, on the tennis courts.
If you could work anywhere, besides Wiley, where would it
be? Of course, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than
Wiley!
Who is your most memorable teacher? Ms. Oppenheimer, my 8th grade Algebra teacher at
A.G. Cox Middle School in Winterville, NC.
She fostered my love of math!
Tell us about one of your craziest teaching moments. On the first day of school one year, I was getting ready to
dismiss my class when I saw a huge mouse scurry across the floor in the back of
the classroom. I tried to remain calm
and cool, but I don’t think it worked so well!
What is your favorite thing about
Wiley? I love so
many things about Wiley. One of my favorites is the time I have in the morning greeting students. I love the smiles and
hugs, and it sets an incredible tone for my day!
