Updates 10/29/12

Updates 10/29/12

*Thank you to ALL of you that participated in this year's International Book Fair! Kids were reading and walking, reading and snacking, and reading and reading and reading this week!! A lot goes into the planning and implementation of a school book fair. Thank you to our dedicated PTA volunteers, Mrs. Molloy, families, and Quail Ridge Books for making this such a successful event for Wiley.

*Want the extra Halloween candy out of the house ASAP?? We'll take it! Wiley will collect candy donations this Thursday and Friday in the main office. The candy will be taken to local dentists that will then send them to US troops all over the world. I suggest making this into a math activity with your kids: count the candy, graph the candy, divide the candy, add and subtract the candy, model fractions and percents with the candy--then donate the candy!

*Don't forget;
-Wednesday, Oct. 31, is a teacher workday and there is no school for students.
-Nov. 6 is a teacher workday and there is no school for students. (Election Day)
-Nov. 12 is Veteran's Day and Wiley is closed for the day.
-Nov. 13 is Fall Picture Retakes and Report Cards go home.
-Nov. 16 the Snowflake Gift Drive begins.
-Nov. 21-23 is the Thanksgiving holiday

*Kindergarten had a great time studying pumpkins Friday! Did you see I posted Mrs. Swartz's tweet? Follow Wiley on our Twitter account. There are new pictures, interesting links, and reminders each day.

*Do you want to read internationally themed FREE books with your kids at home? Check out the International Children's Digital Library for online books that are globally connected. At Wiley we develop our global citizenship through the following four global competencies: Investigation of the World, Recognition of Perspectives, Communication of Ideas, and Taking Action. Talk with your child about one or all of these competencies as you read!

10/22/12 Updates

10/22/12 Updates

*Wow! Our kids are talented! The band concert was fantastic last week. The beginners sounded amazing and the continuing students sounded like old pros!

*It's International Book Fair week at Wiley! Students can begin to purchase books Tuesday of this week. Wednesday, the fair will be open until 6:00pm for families to browse and shop.

*October is Disability History and Awareness Month. At Wiley we are learning and reflecting about the multiple perspectives regarding disabilities and abilities. Ms. McCann's class is currently doing this through their literature study. They are reading Wonder, Sahara Special, and Granny Torrelli Makes Soup to explore the perspectives of those with differences and the people in their lives. I was impressed by the profound presentations of work done by the students based on Wonder. They were inspired by literature, by a character with amazing perseverance, and by their classmates. You could have heard a pin drop while they talked. It is powerful, 21st century learning when students step outside themselves and consider the world through the perspective of others. I am proud of our students for going above and beyond in this way!

*Please check Wiley's website for the most updated calendar. We have many "no school" days coming up. Please see below.
-Oct. 31 is a teacher workday. No school for students.
-Nov. 6 is a teacher workday (and election day). No school for students.
-Nov. 12 is Veteran's Day. No school for students.
-Nov. 13 is Fall Picture retakes and Report Cards go home.
-Nov. 21-23 is the Thanksgiving holiday.

Updates from the Wiley PTA

Phantom Fundraiser is going on now! Make sure you check out the attached flyer in this week's email. We appreciate your support!

Wiley Families, we need your help!
Link your Harris Teeter VIC card.
Harris Teeter will give Wiley money for every purchase you make of a Harris Teeter Brand product during the school year. All you have to do is ask them to link your VIC card! Last year, Wiley earned almost $2,000 from Harris Teeter. At checkout, simply tell the Harris Teeter cashier to link your card to Wiley (#2920), or link on-line atwww.harristeeter.com and press the re-link button on right, You have to relink your VIC card every school year!
The PTA went through the carpool line about 2-3 weeks ago. We were not able to link some of your Harris Teeter VIC cards because last names changed since your enrollment in the VIC Program. Please check the bottom of your Harris Teeter receipt to see if you are linked to Wiley. If there is no school then you need to follow the steps just mentioned. We currently have 100+ families linked to this program. Wiley has roughly over 400 families. Please take a moment right now and link your card online, in the store or call 1-800-432-6111 and choose option #3.
To raise even more free money
November 3 and November 10 – You can help Wiley earn even more money at the Harris Teeter VIC Link events at Cameron Village Harris Teeter, 500 Oberlin Road, Raleigh. You and your Wiley students can help shoppers link their VIC cards to Wiley (to raise funds for all of our students), it is that easy!!! Please RSVP to Stefanie Reed,jeffandstef@gmail.com - We need to have at least 4 families volunteer to make it worthwhile. The event will be on November 3 and November 10 from 10am to 1pm, and don't forget your Wiley wear! You do not have to work both days or the entire 3 hours when you sign up. Please provide Stefanie the best day and time. We can’t do it alone – we need our Wiley parents!!!
