Wiley Spotlight
This week, the spotlight shines on Neena Fortune, 2nd grade teacher.  We saved Ms. Fortune as the year’s final Wiley Spotlight as we bid her farewell.  Of Ms. Fortune’s 32 years in education, 24 of those have been spent at Wiley. We are grateful for her service and hope that retirement brings her relaxation and joy!

Here’s what Ms. Fortune had to say …
What do you like to do during the summer? I love to read (for pleasure), work in my yard, visit family, and go to the beach.  Also, my husband and I go for a walk each evening, and I enjoy listening to the night noises that we hear on our summer walks.
If you could teach anywhere (other than Wiley), where would it be?  I have always wanted to visit Australia so I would teach in Australia.
Who was your most memorable teacher? Ms. Keith, sixth grade teacher at Teachers’ Memorial Elementary, in Kinston, NC. The year I was in her room, the enrollment increased and we were put in a room just off of the stage, the former music classroom.  We were away from all the other classrooms, and we could be loud as we wanted to be so she really incorporated “PLAY” in our day.  She was always an active participant when we were outside for recess, and on rainy days, we played cool games inside.
What is something that you are most proud of, that most people wouldn’t know about you? I am proud that I learned a foreign language and have been able to use it in my teaching.
If you could have anyone as a teacher who would it be?  Fred Astaire - because I love to dance!

Ms. Fortune’s final remarks ...  Wiley has felt like my second home, and I hope that it continues to be a great place for students to learn and grow.

June 1

End-of-Grade testing:
THIRD GRADERS:  Tuesday afternoon, we will receive EOG score reports for third grade students that did not score a level 3 or above on the third grade end-of-grade reading test.  Those students will take the NC Read to Achieve test on Wednesday morning. Students that did not pass the EOG (level 3, 4 or 5) will be invited to a Read to Achieve summer reading camp.  Camp invitations will be sent home Tuesday, June2; responses must be received by Friday, June 5th.
THIRD, FOURTH, & FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS:  Score reports for all third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be sent home with report cards.
Questions can be directed to our testing coordinator, Chris Hahner @ chahner@wcpss.net

Media Center News:  As of Friday, Wiley students still had 174 books checked out from the media center. We cannot afford to lose all of these books from our collection. Parents, please help your students locate and return their missing library books. Notices were given to students on Friday with the title and cost of their missing library books. Typically, these books are on bookshelves at home or in the student's desk or book box at school. We appreciate your help in getting these books back to our media center. Thank you!

Wiley Gardens:  This summer we could use some help with watering the veggie garden (and waterers are welcome to reap what they water!) and helping to keep the grass and clover at bay in the savannah garden. If you live nearby, please sign up to help:

Field Day:  What a fun time!  Thank you to the many volunteers that helped make it such a successful event … and big thanks to Mr. Schisler for organizing one of the best days of the year!

Wiley Spotlight
It’s only fitting that this week’s spotlight shines on Mr. Schisler, our PE teacher (and field day coordinator!).

What do you like to do during the summer? Travel, golf, visit family, swim, relax, and spend time with my kids
If you could work anywhere (other than Wiley), where would it be?  I would be a Sports Broadcaster - either TV or radio would be fine.
Who was your most memorable teacher? Mr. C (Costello) – 7th grade teacher at St. Jude School in Elyria, Ohio.  He was the first teacher I remember that made learning fun. I remember playing spelling bee basketball.  Additionally, this was my first school experience with a male teacher, and it was inspiring to see a male in this professional role.
What is something that you are most proud of, that most people wouldn’t know about you?  I am most proud of the work that it took for me to get where I am now – particularly the success I experienced in graduate school.  School wasn’t always easy for me, and I finally found something I truly enjoyed doing.
If you could have anyone as a teacher who would it be?  Someone that could teach me more about life to help me realize what’s important and not to sweat the small stuff … Ghandi pops into my head.

News from our Wiley PTA
Thank You
In the frenzy of end of year activities, it's not easy to find time to reflect on all the PTA has accomplished this year, but it has been a great year at Wiley! None of it would have been possible without your generosity and support, so thank you, thank you, thank you! Have a wonderful summer, and rest up, we've got more great things planned for next year! Here are a few highlights from 2014/15:
·         Annual Fund- exceeded goal, raised over $17,000
·         Fun Run - exceeded goal- raised over $20,000 for technology
·         Provided Media Center with profits from book fairs, $3800 in new books!
·         Purchased 18 new laptops
·         Purchased storage boxes for playgrounds
·         Purchased two new picnic tables
·         Hosted back to school coffees
·         Instituted new clubs program
·         Increased the number and variety of social events
School Supply Packs:  No more wandering through big box stores looking for the right color folder with no tabs! The PTA is thrilled to announce a partnership with EPI (Educational Products Inc.) to provide school supply packs for Wiley students. Orders must be received by June 29th. Your school pack will be delivered directly to Wiley and be waiting for your child/ren at Meet the Teacher. It takes less than 5 minutes to be done with back to school supply shopping!
Please visit https://www.educationalproducts.com/ShopPacks/ and enter WIL772 for the school ID.

In years past, the PTA has collected donations of school supplies and backpacks. Last year, we were able to fill 70 backpacks with supplies for children who needed them. Instead of collecting and sorting mass amounts of donations, we are asking families who are able, to consider purchasing an extra pack. We will be accepting donations of backpacks and expect the need next year to be even greater than years past. Backpacks may be dropped off at Wiley. Your help is greatly appreciated!

PTA Socials:  Want to learn more about what the PTA is doing at Wiley and how you can get involved? We will have two opportunities this week for you to find out more!
·         Wednesday June 3rd, join us on the K-2 playground, for an after school popsicle social.

·         Thursday, June 4th, the PTA Board will conduct the last meeting of the year on the Rooftop at 401 Oberlin at 6:30pm. All are welcome. Please RSVP by June 2nd to president@wileypta.org, to receive directions.
