Updates from the World of Wiley

Beautification Day:  Huge round of applause to all those that participated in PTA’s recent Beautification Day.  Take a look at the corner garden, and you may not even recognize it!  Students have reported that the afternoon was fun-filled and productive.  Be sure to add Sunday, October 12th to your calendar … we have three loads of mulching-fun ahead!

Interims:  Interims for all students went home last Wednesday. A little confused about what it all means?  Have questions about all those numbers?  Please feel free to connect with your child’s teacher if you’re wishing for more clarity.  Parent/Teacher conferences are around the corner.  At that time, your child’s teacher will share more detailed information about your child’s social-emotional and academic development.

International Walk to School Day:  I just learned about Wiley’s traditions associated with Walk to School Day, and unfortunately, the day has crept up too quickly to organize a formal effort. Please feel free to unite with your friends, family, and neighbors to honor this global event Wednesday, October 8.  Fear not, I already have it on the calendar for next year (October 7, 2015, if you’re interested in adding it to your calendar, too!).

Lost & Found:  The treasures of Lost & Found will be donated to charity on Wednesday.  Please take one final look to see if anything belongs to you.  The Lost & Found cabinet is located on the main floor between the technology lab and the art room.

Special Education Open House:  WCPSS is pleased to offer its 6th Annual Special Education Open House at Martin Middle School on Thursday, November 13 at 6:00pm.  Topics include transitions, curriculum & programs, preschools, and more.  For more information visit:  www.wakeseac.org

Cecilia Rawlins Fund:  The Cecilia Rawlins Fund, honoring a retired Wiley principal, was established to support students in severe economic distress and families in crisis at Wiley International Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh, NC. The funds can be eligible for things like hunger relief, gas cards to assist during a time of emergency or crisis, summer meals, assistance to climb out of homelessness, and Backpack Buddies. All programs and assistance are provided free of charge. Please join us for the fund's kick-off event at the Busy Bee Cafe on November 17. The Wiley Spotlight

This week, the Wiley spotlight shines on Wiley's Assistant Principal, Katie Ware
What do you like to do during the summer?  I like to go the beach and go to the mountains, where I spend time with my two daughters and husband.
If you could teach anywhere (other than Wiley) where would you teach, and why? I would teach at UNC-CH so that I could inspire other teachers.
Tell us something about yourself that you are proud of and that most people wouldn't know about you. I love to create! I crochet, paint, and write songs.  I met my husband while in a band; I was the lead singer and he was the bass player.
What job did you have in high school?  I worked at the local bagel shop and I was a YMCA counselor.  If you could have anyone as your teacher, who would you pick and why? Daniel Pink, author of Drive, because he knows about the importance of purpose and autonomy in order to motivate.
Who was your favorite teacher in Elementary School? Ms. Topkins – fourth grade teacher at Henry Adams Elementary School in Cary.  I loved her.  She valued creativity and inspired me to write.

Room Parents Needed:
Many of our teachers need room parents! Room parents are essential in helping teachers to recruit volunteers, plan special activities for the class and generally help teachers meet the increasing demands of their jobs. Room parents don’t need to be available during the school day—this is a volunteer job that can be handled in the evenings. Reach out to your child’s teacher and vp.communications@wileypta.org if you are interested in being a room parent this year.
